Law enters season with senior-laden defense

Jonathan Law will be on the road to play Guilford in its season opener on Friday at 7 p.m. The game has been moved to North Branford High because Guilford’s new turf field is not ready.

“They have a horse of a running back (Jack O’Brien) and a talented wide receiver (Eric Dolmus) who has been offered to play at Central Connecticut State,” Law coach Chris Haley said of Guilford. “Our kids welcome the challenge of playing regardless of who it is.”

Haley had one word to describe his team.

“Tough,” he said. “I don’t think there is a clip of film from our Bunnell scrimmage that didn’t have 4 or 5 guys flying to the football. All the kids are playing with energy.”

Spencer Hannon, Lucas Pincus-Coyle and John Neider are team captains.

“Spencer played incredible at linebacker against Bunnell, Lucas is our go-to running back, and John will be our quarterback,” Haley said. “Neider is settling into the position. It’s a big jump from wide receiver. As a junior, this is his first go around at QB. Whatever we put on him, he is the kid for job.”

Solomon Mercado, Matt Hagerty, Sam Costantini and Amadeus Bettencourt (transfer from Norwalk) are wide receivers.

Evan Nash will center a line with Kyle Chy and Dom DiFederico at guard and Louis Sabo and Devin Calvin at tackle.

“The offensive line is made of juniors, except Evan,” Haley said. “Center is a tough spot, and he is doing well. Louis Sabo is his guardian out there. He also came in and played as a freshman.”

The defense is senior laden.

Brandon Leslie, Joey Rogers and Gary Schulte are on the line. Hannon, Luke Iaffaldano JT Nelly and Ryan McNellis are linebackers. Michael Merchant, Cody Dineson, Jordan Hernandez and Chris Engel lead the secondary.

“We haven’t been easy on these kids. They’ve taken well to it,” Haley said. “The result (score each week) I do not know. But the product you’ll see on the field is a squared away, tough team. These kids won’t retreat from adversity. If something goes wrong, they will make it right the next play. We’ll see how we stack up on Friday.”
