Lauralton's Kelly Jones wins Neubauer Invitational

Lauralton Hall’s Kelly Jones captured first in the 32nd annual Neubauer Invitational in Wallingford on Tuesday.

Jones ran a 20:27 to best 60 varsity runners in the 5000-meter competition.

Claire Moulton from Jonathan Law was second in 21:21.10.

“It was maybe the most relaxed Kelly has looked all season and it was also probably her best race of the year as well,” said Lauralton coach Ellis Gill, whose Crusaders placed seventh. “Kelly has really had a very strong season and looks to continue her success as we approach the postseason.”

Lauralton senior Carys Cook placed sixth (22:10) to earn a medal as a Top 10 finisher.

“Carys remained patient all race and moved up in place in a very strategic manner,” Gill said. “After the first mile, Carys was somewhere around 15th place. After mile two, she got down to ninth. She ran a very strong race on a very muddy course.”

Lauralton senior captain Maggie Willer finished 22nd.

Gill said: “This was Maggie’s first time running this course and had a solid time of 23:40. Last year, she did not reach this time until the last meet of the season. The fact that she is here in early October is testament to her work ethic. Maggie has really worked to improve herself and it has really shown.”

Laurel Micholovich and Grace McCormack rounded out the top 5 for Lauralton, finishing 47th and 48th on the day.

Portland was the overall team winner.

Lauralton will head to Manchester to compete at the Wickham Invitational on Saturday.
