Green Wave softball gears up for playoff run

New Milford High School softball surely would love to be playing some softball two weeks from Friday at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

Yet there's plenty of work to be done for the Green Wave girls to advance to the South-West Conference's May 24 championship game.

Coach Eileen Holden's diamond crew owned a 10-4 overall record this week as it prepped for games Wednesday against Lauralton Hall at NMHS, Thursday against Masuk at NMHS and Friday at Newtown.

Two of those losses, to Oxford, 4-0, and Bunnell, 6-2, had come in its last four games.

"We need to keep going strong for the next two weeks," said coach Holden early this week. "We have been working very hard so far this week, anticipating our next three games."

Along the way, the Green Wave has easily qualified for the CIAC state tournament.

"The team is very excited to have accomplished one of our many goals," explained coach Holden, "getting our eight wins for states before the start of May."

The next goal is to clinch in a spot in the SWC's eight-team playoffs.

This week, the distaff bat squad attempted to bounce back from the defeat to Bunnell in Stratford.

"We need to get momentum rolling," concluded the NMHS bench boss, "to finish up how we want to in the SWC."

Through its first 14 games, the New Milford girls had outscored its rivals by a cumulative 110-46 count.

The Green Wave is scheduled to cap its regular season next week with games Monday at Brookfield, Wednesday against Stratford at NMHS and Friday, May 17 against Joel Barlow in Redding.
