Foran visits SCC foeLyman Hall in opener

Foran will open is season with a visit to Lyman Hall’s Fitzgerald Field in Wallingford on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

“In the past it has been a spread,” Foran coach Tom Drew said about the Trojans’ offense. “That changes with personnel. In the film I’ve seen, it seems like they are a a team that will be run first. Openers are always tough. The films you get are from quad scrimmages, or the film is with someone you may play so you don’t see that. It is limited.”

AJ Edmond, Barry Held, Jason Cruz, Dean Ross, Kyle Zarnoch and Kyle Pokornowski will captain the Lions.

“We are not a big team in size, but our kids play tough,” Drew said. “They are physical kids. We like to go fast offensively. Defensively we preach 11 hats to the ball. We want to have high motors.”

Jack Cushman, backed by Brett Rohleder, will be the quarterback.

“Jack has done a good job,” Drew said. “Brett had issues with a shoulder for a week or so in the preseason. You never know, so when healthy he will take reps at QB. We need him to rest. He can also find the field at linebacker. Both are juniors.”

Edmond and junior Matt Miller will be the running backs.

“They are bookends, you can list them either way. They are both starters,” Drew said. “We haven’t had a talented duo like this since I’ve been here (fourth year).”

Ross, Pokornowski, Joe Gaetano, Jimmy Cobain and Luca Ubaldi are wide receivers. “They can go all make plays,” Drew said. “I’ve been lucky having height at our wide positions. Joe Gaetano is similar in play to (former stars) Max Tavitian and Will Phelan. He is a big target and can go up and catch balls over the middle.”

Held, Jacob Madarang, Brandon Payne, Cruz and Zarnoch anchor the offensive line.

Drew said defense has been the strength and heart of the team with its energy and toughness.

"We will look to continue with that tradition in 2021,” he noted. “The kids have been working their butts off and looking to make some noise.”

Foran’s 4-2 defensive front will be versatile.

“James Taylor is a linebacker who can play defensive end. Brandon Payne and Kyle Zarnoch can play down (on the line) or at linebacker,” Drew said. “Madarang, Cruz, Maguire Casey and Jason Jimenez will rotate in up front. Edmond and Ubaldi are outside backers. Justin Daniels can play there.”

Ross, Daniel Thanus, Brian Wilcox, Ethan Dominique will be at the corner. Pokornowski and Miller are safeties.

“Our kids have a good grasp of going quick,” Drew said. “When you don’t have to think that much, you play faster. That was our goal as a staff. I think we are in a good spot with the mental phase of the game. Hopefully that allows us to play at a quick pace.”

Foran will compete with Bassick, Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Jonathan Law and Lyman Hall for the SCC Tier 3 title.

“I’m thrilled with our kids and our staff has done a wonderful job,” Drew said. “If you want to be great you must surround yourself with great people. Mike Farrell as offensive coordinator, John Reinecke our DC, Garrett Walker QB coach, Jeff Godon with linebackers and Jesse Rohleder as our freshman coach are awesome. Then we have Tony DiDominzo, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Janik and Ken Patrick. My staff is fantastic.” Twitter: @blox354
