The Foran softball team defeated a pair of higher ranked teams to advance to the Class L quarterfinals.
No. 25 Foran (11-9) will visit No. 1 Masuk on Friday at 4 p.m. in Monroe.
Coach Julie Johnson’s Lions opened states with a 3-2 win in 12 innings over No. 8 Wethersfield. They upended No. 9 Woodstock Academy 19-9 on Wednesday.
Wethersfield (17-3) took a 2-0 lead in the second.
Kendall LaMorte hit a lead-off home run to tie things at 2 in the top of the sixth.
Chloe Nittoly knocked in the first run of the frame after a Kaitlyn Beaupre single and a double by Mary Rodrigues.
Wethersfield intentionally walked LaMorte in the top of the 12th.
Beaupre reached on a bunt single. LaMorte moved to third on a fielder’s choice grounder.
Morgan Viesselman’s sacrifice fly gave Foran the lead.
Viesselman struck out two and fielded a ball back to the circle to account for the final three outs.
Rodrigues (three hits) and Alex Hart (double) each drove in four runs against Woodstock Academy (17-3).
Sarah Connelly hit a home run and drove home two runs.
Nittoly and Viesselman (three hits) had two RBIs each.
Viesselman struck out six and didn’t allow an earned run.
