Players on the Foran girls’ volleyball team have one goal: improve.

“This team it is about working hard not knowing what tomorrow is going to bring,” coach Julie Johnson said. “We are so young, experience young not grade young. Even our players with experience are learning new positions.”

Morgan Viesselman and Arezoo Ghazagh are team captains.

“This group of seniors is great,” Johnson, in her 16th season, said of her captains, Tori Matula, Ava Steigbigel, Delaney Mayville and Bridget Kiernan. “They are as motivated as individuals as they are with the new players.”

Viesselman, who played right side hitter a year ago, and junior Chloe Nitoly are setters.

“Ava Steigbigal, our middle last season, is playing outside. She is very talented, playing all the way around passing and hitting,” Johnson said. “Tori Matula is the libero. She played some defense as a junior.”

The rest of the front players are new to varsity. Junior Kaitlin Beaupre is an outside hitter. Sophomore Isabella Valentin and junior Emma Jani are middle hitters. Freshman Grace Brooks is a right-side hitter.

“Arezoo Ghazagh, Delaney Mayville and Bridget Kearnan are key subs for our defense,” Johnson said. “I have a couple of juniors who will sub. There are four freshmen on the team as swing players (varsity/jayvee). I brought them to our first two games to gain experience. We don’t have a lot of depth with hitting. We have depth passing.”

Miah Lasorso (back row) and Lauren Stroffolino (outside hitter) are juniors. Cameron Lefebvre, Emma Honcz and Agatha Dalton are sophomores.

Johnson said: “We had 25 freshmen try out. That is a great number. We kept 14. It is one of the most athletic freshmen classes I’ve seen.”

Foran dropped its first two matches (Stamford and McMahon), with Johnson seeing improved play in the second game.

“Hopefully, day by day we will get stronger,” Johnson said. “We need these early games for the girls to gain confidence.”

Foran will visit Hillhouse Friday at 5 p.m.
