The Foran boys’ lacrosse team has won four straight games after an 0-2 start. Coach Brian Adkins isn’t surprised because his attack has caught up to the defense.

“We knew coming in we would be strong on defense,” he said. “That is where our experience is. We hoped our scoring would come along.”

Foran lost 11-5 to Sheehan in its opener. West Haven then handed it a 7-4 defeat. Since then Foran has outscored opponents 39-16.

“Our kids gutted out a great 6-5 defensive victory against Branford/East Haven,” Adkins said. “The last two games the offense got going with 15 against Hamden and 12 against Sheehan, which had shut us down the first time.”

Senior Connor Elson, with 10 goals and 10 assists as a sophomore, brought the most points backv to the program after a year away.

Adkins said: “We knew that it would take time to figure out the right combination at attack and where to spot kids in at midfield to get some points. It is easier to score for us in transition. That is what we were able to do in our second Sheehan game. We were able to get out and run. At the same time, we don’t want to play defense for 40 minutes a game. There are times we will slow it down. Ideally, we take advantage of situations.”

Elson, Devin DeMarco, Aidan Schumann Bryan Thompson and Christian Piscitelli, senior captains, are helping to mold the team.

“We have a large sophomore group. I had coached them in Milford Youth Lacrosse, but it is a big jump to high school level from youth,” said Adkins, who is assisted by Harley Cole and Chuck Byrne. “Our seniors have been with the program all four years. They are showing the kids how hard to go every day. They are tremendous leaders.”

Simon Collette is in goal. DeMarco, Schumann, Luca Ubaldi, David Johnson and Jason Barile are long sticks on defense. Thompson, Elson and Piscitelli lead at midfield. Joey Honcz, Chris Adkins and Eli Gomes are on attack.

Foran lost 13 players that missed out on the COVID cancelled 2020 season. Coach Adkins believes they weren’t the only ones that lost an opportunity.

“Kids everywhere missed out on year of jayvee ball,” he said. “There they would have had game experience. Now they are being thrown into a varsity situation. They would have benefitted from that year. “

Jack Cushman, Matt Miller and Craig Mager are sophomores that fall into that category.

Coach Adkins said: “Jack is one of our (attack mode) midfielders, who last played in 8th grade. He is that athletic kid I can point to. You can’t teach some things, but you can refine passing and shooting and he shoots the ball hard.

“Matt on draw didn’t start lacrosse until he was in 8th grade. He and Craig are relacing Teddy Mauro, who was All-State junior year and missed out on his senior year. They would have gained experience learning from Teddy.”
