Danbury’s Camacho named ACC Wrestler of the Week with NC State

Danbury’s Jakob Camacho of the North Carolina State wrestling team has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week following the Wolfpack’s victory at Appalachian State last Sunday.

Camacho, a red shirt sophomore, won a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers when he defeated Caleb Smith by decision, 5-3, at 125 pounds. Camacho scored takedowns in the first and third periods.

Camacho is ranked No. 5 in the country in that weight class, and Smith is No. 30.

That match led off the meet and set the tone for N.C. State’s 25-10 victory.

A graduate of Danbury High, Camacho is unbeaten so far this season, going 6-0 overall to improve his career record to 36-10.

In his first season with the Wolfpack, he won the 2020 ACC championship at 125 and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the meet. Last winter, he was the ACC runner-up and received All-ACC honors.

North Carolina State is off to a 3-0 start in dual meets and is ranked No. 5 nationally.

The Wolfpack’s roster features several former Hatters.

Freshman Ryan Jack wrestles at 141 pounds and is 10-1 this season, with a first-place finish at The Citadel Open tournament. He is 17-4 in his career.

AJ Kovacs, another freshman, is 8-0 this season and also finished first in the 157-pound weight class at The Citadel Open. He is 12-2 in his career.

The Wolfpack will be in Niceville, Fla., this weekend, facing Binghamton and No. 10 Missouri on Saturday, and taking part in the Collegiate Wrestling Duals on Sunday.
