Foran girls’ lacrosse coach Tom Drew kept referencing back to one point when talking about his team.

“What makes this team special is overcoming adversity. Not having a season last year, being in quarantine for two weeks. Our schedule is now heavily game loaded. The mental toughness of the girls is showing through,” he said.

Foran is 2-6 on the season. It will play four games in the next five days.

“We’ve been relying on a lot of younger girls,” said Drew who is assisted by Ashley Springsteen. “We have things we want to work on. This week is going to be draining. I have all the confidence in my players that we will be fine.”

Drew described returning to the field for the 2021 season as exciting and nerve wracking.

“You don’t know to expect when the girls came back,” he said. “For most it was their first time with the varsity. It was the unknown. I’m happy with the young kids and their development.”

Chloe Oliver, Anna Byers and Amanda Queiroz are captains.

Drew said: “Leaders usually establish themselves in their junior years. That’s when they take their roles on the field. Our seniors this year didn’t have that time. Our kids chose great captains and leaders.

“Chloe is our senior goalie. She is going to play next year at Albertus Magnus. She started as a sophomore and is our rock defensively. Chloe gets our defense moving to the right spots. She is a big-time leader for us.

“Anna is our top player in the circle. She has been a key player since she joined the program. Anna is committed to play next year at Wagner.

“Amanda leads our defense. She has a great lacrosse IQ and works well with players we rotate in on defense: Megan McTigue, Emily Brenes, Anna Harris and Abby Woodward.”

Mia Williams plays in the circle beside Byers.

“Mia is our top scorer right now and can find her own shot,” Drew said. “We like to be at 50 percent on faceoffs depending who we play. Amity is dynamic. Sheehan is tough, SHA difficult. Lyman Hall has been on the rise for years.”

Mackenzie Posey, Kylee Payne, Grace Foley join Harris at midfield.

“Anna Byers is injured so we are working Anna Harris in at midfield. We have Haley Ruane who can help us on defense. And we have Emily Eschweiler and Escvhwiler and Kristal Reyes who can spell in. The future is going to be bright for us.”
