Baisley 5th, leads Lauralton at State Open track

Katherine Baisley’s performance in the 100-meter hurdles was the highlight on the day when Lauralton Hall competed in the CIAC State Open track & field meet at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

“For a first-year sophomore to finish 5th overall in the Open meet, well that is something very uncommon,” Lauralton coach Ellis Gill said of Baisley. “Katherine was seeded 14th coming into the meet. In the prelims, she ran a personal best time of 16.00 to finish 9th and qualify for the final. She ran another personal best of 15.81 to earn a medal. On the year, Katherine broke two school records and won multiple medals.”

Kelly Jones, Lauren Baisley, Carys Cook and Katerina Koutouvides placed 14th in the 4x800m relay with a time of 10:09.

“Even though they just missed out on the school record, the girls ran extremely well against the best competition in the state,” Gill said. “It was an awesome way to kick off the meet.”

Jones finished 19th in the 1600-meter run.

Gill said: “Kelly gained some awesome experience running against the best distance runners, which will surely help her with two more years left in her outdoor career. On the season, Kelly was able to break three school records (800, 1600, 3200).”

Gill was pleased with the experience his athletes gained.

“It was great for them to be at the Open meet,” he said. “Our girls all ran very well. Having things get almost back to normal was great this year. We were very fortunate to have a full, uninterrupted season. We will be returning multiple conference and state medalists next year. The future is very bright.”
