Stamford log cabin owned by Mt. Rushmore sculptor listed for over $1M

The log cabin on 400 Wire Mill Road looks like it could be set in the rural Midwest. The home is instead located in North Stamford, but the three-bedroom home is still connected to the Midwest in more than just appearance.

That’s because the property it’s on was previously owned by Gutzon Borglum, one of the sculptors of Mount Rushmore. Borglum owned most of the land surrounding what is now Wire Mill Road in the early 1900s. According to the National Parks Service, Borglum had a primary house and a studio in the area with his second wife, Mary Montgomery Borglum. Borglum was in the design stages of Mount Rushmore while working from his Stamford studio in the early 1930s, and just off Wire Mill Road is a street named after the sculptor and designer. 

In 2013, a Stamford property on 546 Wire Mill Road that Borglum designed and built in 1920 as a carriage house and stable was on the market for nearly $1.4 million, according to real estate website Curbed; the main home on the property burned down.

According to William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty listing agent Karen Sheftell, the current owner of the property told her that Borglum likely lived in the cabin at one time. 

“Borglum owned about 350 acres of land around Studio Road and Wire Mill Road that spanned both sides of the Merritt Parkway,” she said. “When his house was destroyed by a fire, they moved into the cabin.” 

While Sheftell noted that another account of the property states that Borglum might have built the cabin himself in 1877, she said it’s “very possible" he could have built the home and lived there following the fire.

Now on the market for just over $1 million, the 2,000 square-foot cabin has a two-story great room with a stone fireplace, the listing notes, which is the original part of the home. The logs on the exterior of this part of the home were restored by hand by one of the previous owners, who also added insulation to the walls, Sheftell noted,.

The kitchen, which was remodeled in 2021 according to the listing, has cathedral ceilings with purple-painted beams and Brazilian quartz countertops. Sheftell said the counter tops, along with the other finishes in the home, have distinct features.

“The barn doors that [the owner] added were all custom-built by Brazilian craftsmen,” she said. “In the kitchen, there’s Brazilian Negresco quartzite, which is more expensive and durable than quartz, but doesn’t have a shiny finish.”

The home’s two full bathrooms and one-half bathroom have also been remodeled using Italian porcelain tile, with one of the bathrooms featuring a “heated commode,” according to the listing. Sheftell said the toilet is one of the home's more unique qualities. 

“It’s one of those Toto toilets that has an automatic lid,” she said. “It’s like a $12,000 toilet.”

Outside the home, the listing notes there are two stone walls that were “created by expert masons,” and a former two-car garage with heat and air conditioning that could be used as a gym, playroom or recreation space.

For Sheftell, the 400 Wire Mill Road home is suited for a buyer that has an appreciation for the old and the new.

“It has all of today’s amenities, but with this charming feel,” she said. “The buyer for this house is someone who likes unique and interesting. They don’t want a run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter house — they want uniqueness and charm. A house like this is not replicated easily.”
