The Milford Mirror asked the two candidates for city clerk to discuss the key issues, their experience and why they believe they are the ideal choice for Milford City Clerk.

The position of city clerk is not a “political office” although it is an elected position. The City Clerk provides integrity to democracy and the election process, is the official keeper of the city’s records and ensures transparency. Many times it is this office that people will have their first encounter with our city government.

My work experience has well prepared me for this position. Over the past eight years, I have successfully managed my position as State Representative along with a full-time job. Believe it or not State Representatives are considered part-time. When performing my duties as a State Representative, I am not paid by my city job — it is considered zero time.

I have worked for the City of Bridgeport for 18 years and am prepared to retire. Much of what my job duties are mirror the tasks necessary in the clerk’s office. For example, database management, archiving, managing land records, meeting strict deadlines, attention to detail, record keeping and constituent services.

As your State Representative, serving my 4th term, I hold leadership roles. One that I am most proud of is serving as the co-chair of the bipartisan Women’s Caucus. This caucus is comprised of women lawmakers in both the Senate and House. I am honored to have earned the respect and trust of such fine women leaders who recognize my ability to work across party lines, my integrity and my ability to negotiate to get the job done.

I have always been known as a fighter for my constituents, something that I am very proud of.  From stopping the dump at 990 Naugatuck Ave. to leading the charge in a historic vote and veto override of our affordable housing bill, I stand up for you.

I am invested in our community. I am a member of: VFW Post 7788 Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Irish Heritage Society, Milford Elks, Milford Arts Council, Walnut Beach Association, Milford Historical Society, Milford Preservation, Milford Senior Center, Devon Business Association, founding member of the DMBA, the Boys and Girls Club and Devon Rotary.

Combining my experience as an elected representative, and my 18 years of municipal experience, I am confident that I am well qualified to hold this position. I intend to bring my expertise to this office and make it one that is easily accessible both in person and on-line and look forward to providing more community outreach. Everyone who has contact with this office deserves to be met with a smile and warm greeting. It needs to be a reflection of our community as a whole. I will bring experience, integrity and dedication to this office.

I would be honored to represent you, and our city, as your next City Clerk.
