Obituary: William Case Vernon, 80, founder of Vernon Petroleum

William Case Vernon, age 80, longtime Milford resident and beloved husband of Catherine Barden Vernon, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on February 17, 1933, Bill was the son of the late Albert and Carolyn Vernon.

He attended South Side High School in Rockville Center, NY, where Bill was captain of the Varsity basketball team and class president. After graduating, he served in Korea as part of the US Army’s signal corps during the Korean War. Bill worked as an oil broker for the Asiatic Petroleum Co. in New York City, where he met his wife Catherine. Bill later founded his own business, Vernon Petroleum, in which he traded oil barges for International companies.

Bill also contributed to the Milford community as he served on the Pension Board for five years. He was the kindest of spirits, with a fantastic sense of humor and a true ability to light up a room and make everyone feel welcomed and loved.

He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend who will be greatly and sadly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Catherine, of 55 years, Bill is survived by his children: Monica Sartor (George) and William Jr. both of Milford, Barbara of Fairfield and John of New Haven; his brother Peter (Suzanne) of NC; his sisters-in-law, Joyce, Monica, Anna May (George) and Marion; cherished grandchildren, Colleen Tuba (Chris) of Milford, and Ryan Sartor of Milford, as well as his great-grandson Derek Tuba of Milford and his many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Vernon family would like to thank Milford’s emergency response services for their helpfulness and kindness, as well as Yale-New Haven Hospital and Visiting Nurse Services of CT for their care.

A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, April 4th at 10:00 am at the Cody-White Funeral Home followed by the burial at St Raymond’s Cemetery, Bronx, NY with full military honors. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, April 3rd from 4 to 8 pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT 06460.
