Obituary: Mildred Davis Helyer, 87, of Meriden, formerly of Milford

Mildred Davis Helyer, age 87, of Meriden, CT died on December 25, 2013.

She was born 12/29/1925 in the Warehouse Point section of East Windsor, CT and was a member of the 1943 class of Ellsworth Memorial High School. She lived for many years in Milford, CT with her beloved husband Harry H. Helyer. In 1978 they retired to the Port Charlotte/ Punta Gorda area of Florida.

Mildred moved back to Connecticut in 2008. She obtained her masters degree from the University of Connecticut where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and later taught Spanish at Milford High School. She was also co-owner of the Helyer Real Estate Agency in Milford, CT with her husband Harry.

Mildred and Harry were avid bridge players and she became a Gold Life Master in 1975 through her membership in the American Contract Bridge League. Mildred was also very active with the Self Help for Hard of Hearing organization (now called The Hearing Loss Association).

Mildred was predeceased by her husband Harry Helyer (10/22/2002) and her brother Donald Davis.

She is survived by her 3 loving sons: Mark Helyer and his wife Paula of Meriden, CT; Garry Helyer and his wife Jan of Glastonbury, CT; Jeffrey Helyer and his wife Karen of Milford, CT and 5 grandchildren: Alicia, Jason, Dana, Bryan, and Emil. She also leaves her sister, Dorothy Thomas of Titusville, FL.

Mildred’s indomitable spirit and engaging personality created instant bonds with all who met her. Her kind heart, quick wit, sparkling eyes and warm smile will be deeply missed by all.
