Obituary: Mary Catherine Emerson Phillips, 94, of Milford

Beloved mother and grandmother, Mary Catherine Emerson Phillips of Milford passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on January 4, 2015, at the age of 94.

Born in Hamden, CT on July 31, 1920, Mary was the daughter of the late Harold and Catherine McGuire Emerson.

She moved to Milford during high school and graduated from MHS in 1939. In 1942, Mary graduated from St. Raphael’s Nursing School and was immediately hired by Milford Hospital. She worked in the Emergency Room, on the Delivery floor, and finished her career 40 years later as the Head of Pediatrics. She later continued working during her retirement in private duty nursing.

Mary found great joy and purpose in caring for others and helping those in need.  She was a devoted and loving grandmother, who was present for the births of her grandchildren on both the East and West coasts. She was a longtime member of the Milford Senior Gospel Choir, and enjoyed participating in many Senior Center activities, especially basket-making and crafts, and volunteering with their programs for schoolchildren.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 72 years, Claude R. Phillips, her son, Michael Phillips, her brother, Harold Emerson, and her sister, Flora Terheyden.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (John) Wetherell of Milford, Nancy (Gregory) Crawford of Pacific Grove, CA, and Sharon (Ian) King of Cromwell, CT. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Jay Wetherell of Bozrah, CT, and Michael (Johanna) Wetherell of Holtsville, NY; Amy Crawford of New York City, and Matthew Crawford of San Francisco, CA; and Ian King and Taylor King of Cromwell, CT; her two great-grandchildren, Madison and Owen Wetherell of Holtsville, NY; and her sisters-in-law: Marilyn Emerson of Milford, Gladys Phillips of Milford, and Helene Phillips of Jupiter, FL.

Services will be private.
