Obituary: Edmund J. McGuinness, 92, of Milford

Edmund J. McGuinness, age 92, longtime resident of Milford and beloved husband to Dolores Fiore McGuinness entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at CT Hospice in Branford.

Born in New Haven on June 1, 1921, he was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine Cleary McGuinness.

He graduated from Commercial HS in New Haven in 1939 and, prior to his retirement was in sales. Edmund served with pride and honor in the US Navy as a medical corpsman during WWII. He was attached to the 2nd Marine Division in Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa and, after the war, occupied Japan.

Ed was also one of the original members of the San Salvador Council of the Knights Of Columbus in New Haven, having become a member its very first year in 1946. A communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Edmund was a loving and kind husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife and nurse, Dolores of 55 years, he is survived by his children, Anne Berte and her husband William of Melrose, MA, Patricia Tivnan and her husband Paul of Wilmington, MA and Edmund McGuinness, Jr. of Wallingford; grandchildren Grace and Edmund Berte, and Christopher and Sean Tivnan; his very special brother and sister in laws; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor McGuinness and brother, Thomas McGuiness.

The family wishes to thank CT Hospice Home and Inpatient Care for going above and beyond the level of care we could have hoped for. Also, thanks go out to the many friends and neighbors who were always there to help us through Ed’s many illnesses to which he always came back from good as new; earning him the nickname, the “Energizer Bunny”.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 22nd at 12:00 pm (MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH) at St. Mary Church, 70 Gulf St., Milford. Interment will be private. Friends and family may call on Friday, February 21st from 3 to 7 pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford CT 06460.
