Agnes Rynkiewicz Stegner, age 90 of Stratford, beloved wife of the late Burdette J. Stegner passed away peacefully on January 20, 2014 in St. Vincent’s Medical Center with her loving family by her side.
Agnes was born on November 5, 1923 in Bridgeport and was the daughter of the late Ben and Mary Rynkiewicz.
Agnes has been a Stratford resident for over 50 years and she is well recognized as a leading fundraiser in the area. She has raised over $1 million for charities and has received numerous awards for her outstanding achievements. She was an honorary member of Mill River Country Club, recipient of the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance John Wentworth “Good Sport” Award, which recognizes individuals who have been instrumental in promoting sports in their communities.
Agnes has co-chaired the Stratford Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament and was the Chairperson of the Saint Vincent’s Heart to Heart Golf Tournament. She was one of the organizers and co-chairperson of the Michelob Pro-Am and the Cardinal Sheehan Classic Golf Tournaments in addition to volunteering at many regional tournaments, including, St. Mark’s, Swim Across the Sound, the Borck Memorial and Vazzy’s, the Greater Bridgeport Inter-Club Junior Tournament as well as the 1974 USGA, the 1979 US Women’s Open and the 1987 US Senior Open.
Agnes is survived by two sons, Dale Stegner and wife Sandra of Milford and Scott Stegner of Shelton, four grandchildren, Scott Ulman and wife Tina, Todd Ulman and wife Angela, Darcy Cook and husband K.C. and Craig Stegner and wife Andrea, three great grandchildren Vance, Charlie and Carter and two nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Friday January 24, 2014 at 10:00 AM Directly in St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Putney Cemetery Stratford.Friends may call at the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home 2220 Main Street Stratford on Thursday from 3:00 -7:00 PM.
