Obituary: John E. Cunningham, 82, of Milford
John E. Cunningham, age 82, beloved husband of Alice (Dooling) Cunningham for 62 years, passed away at home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer on May 21, 2014.
Jack was a life-long resident of Milford, CT. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War most of the time aboard the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Lake Champlain. Jack was proud of his 37-year career with United Technologies at the Sikorsky Aircraft and Pratt Whitney divisions working as Supervisor in the design engineering group. After retiring, he worked at TC Engineering for five years.
Jack was passionate about sports. He took great joy coaching his sons’ football, baseball and basketball teams, as well as following the games of his grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and member of the hole-in-one club. He loved following all UConn teams, the New York Mets, Notre Dame and the New York Giants.
Jack was known by all as a very kind, easy going and giving person. He was always willing to help neighbors, friends and family. He possessed an amazing can do spirit. He was blessed with a mechanical ability and could build or fix most anything. Jack had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great story teller drawing upon his life experiences.
He is survived by Alice, who provided loving care right up to his last moment, his sons and daughter-in-laws, Kevin (Cheryl) of Simsbury and Mark (Gayle) of Glastonbury and brother William (Patricia) of Cheshire. Jack adored his grandchildren Caitlin, Meghan, David, Allison, Kyle and Matt.
He was predeceased by his parents Richard and Florence, brother Richard, sister Mary Barnick, and son Craig.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 27th from 4-8 PM at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 N. Broad Street, Milford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 28th at St. Mary’s Church, 70 Gulf Street, Milford, CT at 1030 AM. Burial will follow by at King’s Highway Cemetery, Cherry St., Milford, CT.
