Irene “Sunny” Boncek, 86, of Milford, passed away on February 1, 2016.

She was born on July 30, 1929 to the late Stephen and Loretta Balogach.

Sunny worked for the Milford Citizen for many years, starting as the society editor and eventually becoming the sunday editor. She also wrote her own column, “On the Sunnyside.” She was named Woman of the Year in Milford in 1984 and won the Milford Elderly Services Initiative Award in Journalism in 1998. In addition, she received the Milford Citizen “Scouting Around” award in recognition for telling the story of scouting. Sunny was later employed at the Milford Senior Center and was a board member of the Milford American Red Cross.

Sunny is survived by her son, Joel (Andrea) Boncek; her grandchildren, Joseph (Paige Kitson) Boncek, Lauren (Andrew) Polhemus, Thomas McLoughlin and Patrick McLoughlin; her great-grandchildren, Isla Elizabeth Polhemus, David Gray and Lillian Ann McLoughlin; and her nephews, Steven (Cathy) Moretti and Scott Moretti.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Jody Boncek Chittem and her sister, Loretta Moretti.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Feb. 5, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary Church, 70 Gulf St., Milford, CT.  Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 at the CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 Broad Street, Milford, CT. Interment will be follow at King’s Highway Cemetery, 271 Cherry St., Milford, CT.
