Longtime Milford resident Barbara McLaren died peacefully at her current home in Lyman, Maine on July 11. She was 98.

Barbara was the matriarch of a five generation family that includes four children, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Born as Barbara Louise Porter on February 18, 1919 in Somerville, MA to Francis and Bessie (nee Newall) Porter, Barbara graduated from Arlington High School in Arlington, MA and received a paralegal degree from a Boston business school. She was married to John R. McLaren, a lawyer, Milford town official and entrepreneur, for 53 years.

Barbara lived in Milford from 1951 to 1998 and worked as the claims manager at Shelby Mutual Insurance. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Milford Power Squadron. For many years, Barbara was sponsor/chairwoman of the Wepawaug Chapter of the Future Secretaries Association. Barbara lived in Lyman, Maine for the past 19 years.

Artistic and creative by nature, Barbara pursued many interests including painting, gardening, sewing, cooking, baking, power boating, photography, genealogy and storytelling. She loved all people, but mostly her children and their families.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother—Robert Porter of Winchester, MA.

She is survived by her four children, Carol Gregory and spouse Terry Nichols of Boca Raton, FL, Richard McLaren of Edgewater, FL, Linda McLaren and spouse Allan Hayse of Lyman, ME, and Sally McLaren and spouse Ben Gumm of North Berwick, ME. Her nine grandchildren include Grayson Gregory, Melora Gregory, Asch Gregory Robertson, Jennifer Ledy, Heather McLaren, Craig McLaren, Cynthia DeSalazar, Eric Gammons and Alexander McLaren Gumm.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29 at 3 pm at the Goodwins Mills United Methodist Church located at 55 Church St. in Lyman, Maine, 04002. A graveside service will be held on a date to be announced at St. Mary's Cemetery in Milford.
