Emily Phyllis Russo

Emily Phyllis Russo, age 88, of Orange, CT, died on January 8, 2013.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 14, 1924. The beloved wife of Dr. Anthony J. Russo for sixty years, she was the daughter of the late Rocco and Odelia Leone.

Emily is survived by her wonderful children, Drs. Jane and Walter (Erica) of Milford, Dr. Peter of Guilford, and Martha (Dr. Joseph Ryan) of Ward, Colorado, and her delightful grandchildren, Claire, Amelia, and Holly Russo, Laura and Peter Kurjanowicz, and Odelia and Henry Ryan. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Louis Leone (Virginia) of Northampton, Massachusetts, and two nieces, Dr. Ann Leone and Linda Hazelton.

She was predeceased by her grandson, Kyle Kurjanowicz.

Emily earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Simmons College and a Masters of Medical Social Work  from Boston University School of Social Work. She is listed in the 1946-1947 edition of “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.”

Emily’s first position of employment was at the University of Pennsylvania Social Service Department. In Boston, she was an assistant to the Medical Social Work Consultant in the Massachusetts Department of Social Welfare. After moving to Milford in 1954, she worked in the Social Work Department of the West Haven Veterans’ Hospital.

After raising her family, she had a medical social work consultant practice for twenty years. Emily was associated with nursing facilities where she supervised practicing social workers and students from Sacred Heart University and Southern CT State University. She also established the Social Work Program for the Orange and Trumbull Visiting Nurse Associations.

Emily was a member of the First United Church of Christ for fifty years.

Visitation will be Sunday January 13, 2013 from 2- 6pm at Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 N.Broad St., Milford. A Prayer Service will held at 5 pm. Burial will be private.
