CAREER CHANGE? State tech school system offers lower-cost LPN program

Applications for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program at the Connecticut Technical High School System are now being accepted for the August 2015 session. The program is open to anyone, including recent high school graduates and adults seeking a new career direction in a sought-after field. It has the lowest tuition of LPN programs in Connecticut, according to publicity material. LPN jobs on the rise “As the elderly population increases and demand for long-term care rises, LPN employment is expected to grow faster than any other health occupation through 2017,” said Patricia Fennessy, a registered nurse and education consultant for the Connecticut Technical High School System. The Connecticut Department of Labor expects a nearly 22% jump in LPN jobs from 2012 to 2020, according to Fennessy. Sites: Bridgeport, Hamden, Waterbury The program is offered in six locations: Bridgeport, Hamden, Hartford, Middletown, Norwich and Waterbury. Sessions run from late-August to December and resume January to June. Graduation is mid-June 2017. Students complete a series of nursing classes and two levels of diverse clinical experience at multiple facility sites. Clinical practice begins within the first three months of the program. Transfer to RN college program As a result of an agreement with the Connecticut Community College Nursing Program, students can transfer to an RN program in their second year (if accepted) or receive college credits that can be used toward completion of an associate degree’s with the Connecticut Community College Nursing Program. CT Tech High School System The Connecticut Technical High School System operates 17 diploma-granting technical high schools, one technical education center, and two aviation maintenance programs located throughout the state. The system serves approximately 11,200 full-time high school and adult day students, with education and training in 31 occupational areas.
