Optimum’s Power to Learn recognized students at Foran High School last week for participating in this year’s Charity Champions, a program from Power to Learn that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity of their choice.
The school was presented with $1,000 to be donated to the Kenneth Walker Scholarship Fund and $500 for the furtherance of its fundraising activities. State Rep. James Maroney participated in the event.
After welcoming remarks from student advisor Amy Farotti, Cablevision Manager of Public Affairs Kristen Thurber discussed the school’s involvement with Charity Champions.
Maroney then spoke to students about the importance of community service.
The Kenneth Walker Scholarship Fund was established after the unexpected death in 2012 of the school’s beloved physical education teacher, who had served as a coach and teacher in the Milford school district for over 37 years.
“I congratulate all of the students committed to raising funds for the Kenneth Walker Scholarship Fund,” Maroney said. “Programs such as this help teens look beyond themselves and realize that they too can make a difference in the life of someone else. I would also like to thank Cablevision for making the Charity Champions program available to the young people in our schools.”
Cablevision Vice President of Public Affairs Jennifer Ostrager said, “Power to Learn’s Charity Champions program is focused on encouraging charitable efforts at the high school level. We congratulate the students at Foran High School for their participation and applaud their leadership in providing the Kenneth Walker Scholarship Fund with additional support. ”
Power to Learn has launched its fifth annual Charity Champions competition for the 2013-2014 school year. Charity Champions promotes volunteerism and helps to raise money for a school-selected charity. Students commit time and effort to raising money, competing against other schools, and contributing the funds raised. A grand-prize winner from participating schools in each of the six tri-state regions that Cablevision serves will be selected in the spring and awarded $5,000 for their school’s chosen charity.
