Steve Gottlieb has been appointed principal of Harborside Middle School and will begin the job at the end of this school year, school officials said.

Gottlieb is currently the principal of Torrington Middle School.

“He brings to Harborside much expertise in curriculum, instruction, assessment and the needs of the middle school child,” said School Supt. Dr. Elizabeth Feser. “At Torrington Middle, Steve raised expectations while simultaneously building a culture of professional collaboration focused on student learning, which led to increased student performance. Students, staff and parents respect him; they know he cares deeply about every child.”

Gottlieb has been in Torrington since 2007, serving as an assistant principal at two elementary schools for two years and assistant principal at Torrington Middle School for two years before being named principal.

Prior to Torrington, he taught at the elementary level in Stamford for eight years, grades 3-5, and at the middle school in language arts for three years.

“We are excited to have Steve assume the role of Harborside's principal,” Feser said, adding that he is expected to start in July.

Gottlieb replaces Gordon Beinstein, who will be leaving Milford June 30 to assume the post of principal at Western Middle School in Greenwich.

Beinstein joined the Milford Public Schools in 2009 as principal of Harborside Middle School. Prior to his tenure in Milford, he was an assistant principal of Middlesex Middle School in Darien for six years.

Beinstein lives in Greenwich, and he said that was part of the appeal of the new job.
