DAR announces annual essay contest topics
As the 2015-16 school year begins, so do the Annual DAR history essay contests.
The Milford Chapter of the DAR, Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter, is the local sponsor of two contests: American History and Christopher Columbus.
American History Essay Contest (Grades 5-8)
A Colonial Family’s Reaction to the Stamp Act: March 22, 2015 marks the 250th anniversary of the Stamp Act. Passed by the British Parliament in 1765, this new tax required all colonists to pay a tax on every printed piece of paper they used. The Stamp Act was viewed by the colonists as “taxation without representation.”
Describe a colonial family’s discussion about the new Stamp Act and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British King and Parliament.
Christopher Columbus Essay Contest (Grades 9-12)
Columbus and Lindbergh: A Journey Across the Atlantic: Discuss the similarities and differences between Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the new world and Charles Lindbergh’s first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. What affect did the 400 years between their accomplishments have on what each man hoped to achieve, the challenges they faced, and the skills essential to their success?
Essays are due Friday, Dec. 4, and can be mailed to the Freelove Baldwin Stow DAR Chapter, 55 Prospect Street, Milford, CT 06460.
