Claire Casey was voted onto the Board of Education Tuesday to fill the unexpired term of former Board of Education Majority Leader Laura Fucci (D-5).

Fucci resigned in January after GOP criticism that she had moved out of the Fifth District, which she represented.

Fucci said she hadn't finished moving yet, but resigned anyway to avoid conflict over a school budget vote. She said she had planned to resign when she finished moving.

Casey's name was presented to the full board at its meeting Tuesday.

“Claire is simply one of the hardest working, conscientious and capable people I know,” said Democratic Town Committee Chairman Rich Smith. “The people of Milford are very fortunate to have someone of Claire's ability and dedication willing to serve on our Board of Education.”

Casey was sworn into the post at the Milford City Clerk's office Wednesday afternoon so she could take part in a board meeting Wednesday night.

Casey teaches fifth and sixth grades at a Catholic school in Stratford. She has lived in Milford for 26 years and has two children who attended Milford public schools, according to Board Chairman Susan Glennon.

School board member Robert Satti Jr. (D-3) was named majority leader in Fucci's place during a January board meeting.
