The Milford Education Foundation held its second annual Milford Invention Convention on Saturday, March 28 at Jonathan Law High School
Following the format of the Connecticut Invention Convention, more than 100 children ranging from kindergarten to seventh grade presented their problem-solving ideas in groups — called judging circles — to their peers and local judges. Fourteen young inventors were chosen to represent Milford at the state convention in May.
“It was a proud day for Milford,” said Milford Public Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Feser, who also participated as a judge. “This was a great opportunity for students to imagine and create an invention that potentially could make life better for individuals, and have parents and family members present to support them.”
The Milford Education Foundation partnered with the Milford Public Schools, the Milford Public Library and the Boys & Girls Club of Milford to support workshops and other opportunities designed to inspire invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. Jake Mendelssohn, Outreach Director for the Connecticut Invention Convention, attended last weekend’s event. He said, “What is happening in Milford is an example of what can be accomplished when the public, in this case in the form of the Milford Education Foundation, works together with the public schools toward common goals.”
A red carpet welcomed the inventors and students from Joseph Foran High School’s video production program captured the children’s creativity and accomplishments throughout the event. Matthew DeLucia, a sixth-grader who was selected as a finalist for his “Can Squeezer,” said, “It was cool to think about, build and share the final product."
Funding for the program was provided by a grant to the Milford Education Foundation from The Harvey Hubbell Foundation. The 32nd Annual Connecticut Invention Convention will be held on Saturday, May 2 at UCONN’s Gampel Pavilion and is open to the public.
