The members of the CT State Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists (DAC) and the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) wish to remind people of all faiths that Thursday, May 5 is the 65th annual National Day of Prayer.
Because of the faith of many of our founding fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in American tradition. The Supreme Court affirmed the right of state legislatures to open their sessions with prayer in Marsh vs. Chambers (1983). Days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation.
