Milford police K9 armors up

The Milford Police Department’s dog Diesel has been provided a ballistic vest thanks to a nonprofit organization called Vested Interest in K9s, which is a Massachusetts based nonprofit organization, and Armor Express, a Michigan based manufacturer.

Diesel is a four-year-old German Shepherd handled by Officer Sean Degnan of the Milford Police Department’s K9 Unit.

Diesel is certified as a patrol canine, having completed several criminal apprehensions, evidence recovery and successful tracks for people of interest.

An incentive program offered by Armor Express of Central Lake, Mi., to Vested Interest in K9s, provided 13 law enforcement dogs in seven states with ballistic vests. For every 15 vests purchased by the charity, a free vest was awarded.

Each vest costs $950 and has a five year warranty.

Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s has provided over 1,100 law enforcement dogs with protective vests since their inception in August of 2009.
