Police trying to ID suspect who scammed elderly woman

The Milford Police Department investigated an attempted fraud that occurred at the Hampton Inn, 129 Plains R., May 24.

According to police, an elderly female in Illinois received a phone call from a man pretending to be her nephew. The man told her that he had been arrested in Connecticut and needed money to get out of jail. The man asked her to send $4,000 cash to the Hampton Inn in Milford, police said.

The victim sent the money via UPS. She was able to make contact with her nephew and confirm that the call was a scam. She reported the incident to her local police department and they contacted the Milford Police Department to intercept the package.

A Hispanic male with long braids wearing a black zip-up sweatshirt with white stripes attempted to pick up the package but the hotel staff was alerted to only release the package to police.
