'Backpage bandit' charged with attacking woman at local hotel

A Bridgeport man is charged with tying up a woman and robbing her while she was at a local hotel.

The Milford Police Department has an ongoing investigation into females being robbed in local hotels and motels while offering services through a website called “backpage.com” according to a police department press release.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of Jonathan Arzu, 23, of  297 Laurel Avenue, Bridgeport on Sept. 15. Arzu is accused of forcefully entering a Boston Post Road hotel room on July 27 with two accomplices and tying up a female with phone cord and then ransacking the hotel room, robbing the female of money and a cell phone while holding a knife to her neck.

Arzu’s identity was developed through DNA evidence and he was also eventually identified by the female victim.

Future arrests are expected for other investigations involving Arzu, known as the “backpage bandit.”

Backpage is a classified advertising website that offers classified listings including automotive, jobs listings, real estate and services.

"In 2011, Backpage was the second largest classified ad listing service on the Internet in the United States after Craigslist," according to an online source.

Arzu is charged with the following: Robbery 1st, Unlawful Restraint, Larceny 6th.

Arzu was held on a $50,000 bond to appear in Milford Superior Court on Sept. 15.
