RumRunners show supports St. Mary mission to Haiti

The St. Mary Parish Twinning Committee is set to send its medical mission team to Marbial Haiti on Feb. 28, the fifth time the group will travel to its sister parish, Ste. Therese.

To raise funds for the trip, The Rumrunners, a local band, is supporting the committee by headlining the Hearts for Haiti Valentine's Dance on Feb. 7 at the new auditorium at Notre Dame High School in West Haven.

In addition to approximately 12 doctors and medical professionals, the medical mission team will include Joe Debs, responsible for the Gift of Water (GOW) clean water program that the committee administers.

Debs will meet with the two Ste. Therese water technicians and visit sites where the GOW system has been implemented to better understand how the systems are currently used as well as issues and opportunities. He will report back to the Twinning Committee with recommendations about the GOW program that the committee will share with the parish.

All are welcome at the Hearts for Haiti Valentine's Dance with The RumRunners. All proceeds will benefit the Twinning Committee’s mission. Tickets are a $20 each — BYOB and snacks. Music, mixers and  coffee are provided.

Tables of 10 will be reserved with full payment of $200 in advance. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the rectory by calling or visiting the rectory at 203-878-3571, 72 Gulf Street, Milford between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Twinning Committee Medical Mission team members will spend the week at the parish in Marbial and at a surgical facility in Jacmel providing immunizations, surgeries and a medical clinic to the parishioners of Ste. Therese

“Medical mission members each pay for their own airfare,” said Doctor Richard J. Garvey, senior attending general surgeon at Bridgeport Hospital, and medical director for the mission. “About 75% of the cost of the mission is associated with charges for a surgical facility in the city of Jacmel and medicines. The remainder of the costs are travel and room and board for the medical team members while in Haiti.”
