Rotary buys dictionaries for third-graders

The Devon Rotary Club continued its annual tradition of helping make smarter students in Milford by delivering dictionaries to local third graders.

Club members John Bergin, Scott Moulton, Dean Parrott, Ann Brignola, Greyson Schwing and Bob Morelli recently hand-delivered brand new dictionaries to third graders at Meadowside, Pumpkin Delight and St. Gabriel School elementary schools.

At Meadowside and Pumpkin Delight, Principals Gail Krois and Carrie Keramis joined in delivering the books to each of the classrooms.

At St. Gabriel School, Schwing taught children the Rotarian “Four Way Test,” while introducing them to the joy and smell of a new book.

The “Four Way Test” measures the things Rotarians “think, say and do” while posing the questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? and will it be beneficial to all concerned?

According to Krois, “The students were so excited and grateful to receive the dictionaries. A number even chose to bring them to the lunchroom. Kids were seen continuing to browse their dictionaries, picking out familiar words and new ones to learn.”

This is the club’s 10th year doing this program, which was a partnership with the Milford Rotary Club.
