Flag disposal and repair offered on Labor Day

People with a worn American flag beyond repair may bring it to the Milford Historical Society, 34 High Street by Labor Day, Sept. 2, and put it in a receptacle for proper disposal.

Ryan Lapadula, a member of Scout Troop 1 of Milford who has chosen this as a service project, will pick up the tattered flags.

Boy Scout publications have instructions for the proper way to retire American flags: "When our national flag is worn beyond repair, it may be burned in a simple ceremony conducted with dignity and respect. The flag must be reduced to ashes and be unrecognizable as a former flag."

Lapadula will be assisted by the American Legion.
