BIC Golf Classic raises funds for scholarships
On Monday, July 14, more than 100 golfers representing businesses throughout Milford will hit the fairways for a good cause.
The annual BIC Golf Classic, held at Mill River Country Club, is sponsored by BIC Corporation and benefits the Milford Chamber of Commerce Trust Fund. The community is invited to participate by calling 203-878-0681 to register.
The day begins at 9 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast. The putting contest will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the tournament’s shotgun start is at 11 a.m.
After golf, participants will convene in the banquet room for hors d’oeuvres and dinner with carving stations and an open bar.
There will be many prizes, including a BIC Paddleboard and a case of Chateau de Ferrand Grand Cru, from the Bich family vineyard in St. Emilion. The entry fee is $225 per golfer. Each participant will also receive a thank you gift.
The Milford Chamber of Commerce Trust Fund was founded in 1981 for educational, charitable, scientific and literary purposes and is administered by the Milford Chamber of Commerce, Inc.
The Chamber Trust is a nonprofit group. The Board of Trustees is comprised of past presidents/chairmen of Milford Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Over the past 20 years the Chamber Trust has provided funding for multiple charitable purposes, including humanitarian aid to victims of natural disasters through such groups as the United Way of Milford, American Red Cross, Beth-El Shelter, Rotary Foundation and Sandy Hook Fund.
To date, the Chamber Trust has encouraged and fostered educational goals by awarding hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to area youth, as well as providing mini-grants to students in the Milford school system.
The BIC Golf Classic began in 1997 at the Golf Course at Yale. Approximately $12,500 was raised with 70 golfers. The tournament grew in 2002 when it was moved to Mill River Country Club in Stratford and now averages more than 100 golfers raising approximately $30,000 for the Milford Chamber of Commerce Trust’s scholarship fund.
BIC Corporation is the major tournament sponsor, and has been from the beginning. Ken Brannin, then vice president of production with BIC, along with Kathy Alagno, Milford Chamber president, started the BIC Golf Classic in 1997. The tournament was started to benefit the Milford Chamber Trust which, at the time, was funding one $500 college scholarship. That number grew to $7,500 in year 2000 and now raises over $20,000 every year.
