The Southern Connecticut Diamond Club, Inc. will honor 29 area high school baseball players at its annual awards banquet on Sunday at Monticello\u2019s Restaurant in Meriden. Each player will be presented with the John \u201cWhitey\u201d Piurek \u201cThere\u2019s No \u2018I\u2019 In Team\u201d Award. Named for the longtime West Haven High coach, the honor is awarded to the member of each team who gives most unselfishly to his program. In addition to the Piurek awards, the club will present the Samuel Burrell Jr. Coach of the Year award to Brian Hayden of Guilford. Also, the George Klivak Team of the Year will be presented to Amity. Membership is open to applicants 18 or older who have established a satisfactory record of health and character and must reside in New Haven County. All applicants must pass a background check. Qualified applicants must pass the written examination, then take the IAABO Practical Floor Test. Candidate clinics will begin in September.
