Bjoern Wylezich / TNSThree Hartford County women have been charged with stealing more than $35,000 from public assistance programs, the state Division of Criminal Justice announced Wednesday.
The women — Cassandra George, 34, of West Hartford, Raeann Gilbert, 35, of Bloomfield and LaCoya Taylor, 34, of East Hartford — were each charged in separate warrants with first-degree larceny and second-degree making a false statement, according to the state agency's news release.
The agency said the incidents were unrelated to each other.
According to the agency, George received $15,528 in benefits she was not entitled to by failing to report the income of a legally liable relative who lived with her.
From January 2020 to November 2020, George received $11,528 from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. She also received $4,000 in benefits from Care 4 Kids, the state's child care subsidy program. However, the DOJ said she was not eligible for the program.
Gilbert also failed to report she was living with a legally liable relative, as well as that relative's income, to get $17,243 in SNAP benefits, the agency said.
George and Gilbert were released on $10,000 bonds and are scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Hartford on Feb. 2, the agency said.
Taylor failed to report income from her employment to get $2,355 in SNAP benefits, the DOJ said. She was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Manchester on Thursday, according to the agency.
