West Haven police: Man caught with drugs, gun with extended magazine

WEST HAVEN — A man is facing multiple charges after he was allegedly found in a car with drugs and a handgun with an extended magazine last month, police said.

On Feb. 18, West Haven police responded to a home on Lamson Street for a "vandalism complaint," the department said in a post on its Facebook page.

At the address, police found Diego Garro sitting in his vehicle, the department said.

"Upon contact with Garro, Officers observed in plain view a Glock 19 with an extended magazine as well as numerous bags of various narcotics," the department said.

Police ordered him out of the car, at which time Garro started to fight with the responding officers, police said. He was handcuffed after a struggle and arrested.

West Haven police said Garro was charged with interfering with an officer, two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, three counts possession of a controlled substance, two counts possession with intent to sell narcotics and intent to sell marijuana. Police said he was also charged with weapons in a motor vehicle, illegal possession of a high capacity magazine and "numerous motor vehicle offenses."

Court records indicate Garro was released on $200,000 bond. He's due to appear in state Superior Court in Milford on March 14.

In 2020, Garro, then 19 and living in New Haven, was arrested by Meriden police during a SWAT raid. Garro was arrested along with two others after the group was allegedly caught with assault weapons, body armor and several ounces of marijuana. He's pleaded not guilty to all charges in that case, which remains pending.
