Zoning board ponders use of digital billboards
The Planning and Zoning Board deferred any action on a proposed regulation change to allow the use of digital billboards in the Interchange Commercial District and the Industrial District.
The Industrial Design zone is roughly located between I-95 and the Metro North railroad tracks west of the Schick facility off Home Acres Road. The Interchange Commercial District zone is encircled by the Industrial Design zone and is located along both sides of Old Gate Lane.
The current regulation under Article V, Sec., 22.214.171.124 of the zoning regulations states, “Electronic message signs are prohibited. An electronic message sign shall not be defined to include clocks and/or thermometer displays.”
Attorney Winthrop S. Smith Jr. made the proposal, and in response City Planner David Sulkis told the board the proposal would be on a “future agenda in compliance with Connecticut General Statutes.”
The delay gives the board time to circulate the proposed regulation change to city agencies, adjoining towns, and the South Central Regional Council of Governments.
When contacted by phone the day after the meeting, Smith declined any comment on the proposal.
