Young woman who died in ATV crash was Platt graduate

A young woman who died this past weekend in an ATV accident in North Haven was a 2010 graduate of Platt Technical School, and a former school official described her as a “bright and shining light.”

The Hartford Courant identified the woman as Katherine Diaz, 23, of West Haven.

According to a report from the North Haven Police Department, on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. North Haven police officers, Wallingford Fire Department personnel, and North Haven Fire Department personnel responded to Dodge Avenue in North Haven for a report of an ATV crash.

Investigating officers found a husband and wife were riding their ATVs in a wooded area near the North Haven and Wallingford town line. While riding near 100 Dodge Avenue, Diaz reportedly struck a tree, resulting in severe injuries. Paramedics treated her at the scene and transported her to an area hospital, where she eventually succumbed to her injuries.

Former Platt principal Gene LaPorta remembered Diaz fondly and said she was an outstanding student, a “bright and shining light.”

“Honors student, track star, wonderful family … all of it,” LaPorta said.

Diaz attended UConn in Waterbury and was completing classes at Gateway Community College, according to an obituary notice.

She is survived by her parents and by her husband, Romel Sarmiento, and their infant son, Jayden Sarmiento.

Family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian burial at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 115 Blatchley Avenue, New Haven, an obituary notice states.

There will be a graveside service Friday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, 769 Ella T. Grasso Blvd., New Haven.

Memorial donations may be made in Jayden Sarmiento’s name, c/o Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Avenue, East Haven CT 06512, in memory of his mother, the obituary notice states.
