The Xplosion 16U baseball team, based out of Trumbull’s Triple Play Batting Cages, won the 2012 NYEB/CABA Battle of the Bats Qualifier Tournament in Newburgh, N.Y. on June 24.
In a tightly-contested championship game, Xplosion defeated the Mamaroneck (N.Y.) Tigers, 3-2, and finished the two-day tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning of the finals, Xplosion’s Kyle Cavadi stroked a two-out, two-run double.
Kevin Johnson doubled in Cavadi and gave Xplosion a 3-1 lead. Despite having pitched five innings the day before, Xplosion starter Justin Lynch allowed just three hits and struck out the last batter he faced in the fifth with runners at second and third.
CJ Rizzo then pitched the final two innings to gain the save after throwing a complete-game victory earlier in the day.
After allowing an unearned run to make the score 3-2, Rizzo struck out the final batter of the game and stranded the tying run at second in the process. Xplosion advanced to the finals in dramatic fashion earlier in the day.
In a wild semifinal game, Xplosion defeated ND Cardinals of New York, 12-11, in a tiebreaker.
Eight players had at least one RBI for Xplosion.
Johnson, pitching in relief, faced a bases-loaded situation with one out in the tiebreaker. The right-hander recorded a strikeout and groundout to end the threat and send Xplosion to the championship game.
In the quarterfinals, Xplosion knocked off NY Bulls Baseball, 3-1, as Rizzo scattered three hits and struck out nine.
Brett Scanlon had a two-run single to lead the offense.
Xplosion went 2-0 in pool play during the tournament.
In game one, they beat the Tri-County (N.Y.) Bulldogs, 8-0, behind Lynch’s solid pitching (seven strikeouts in five innings) and Matt Tarantino’s three RBIs.
Xplosion then knocked off the Hit-n-Run (N.Y.) Highlanders, 7-6, in a thrilling game two.
Tied 6-6 in the seventh inning, Rizzo singled and scored on Kevin Bova’s sacrifice fly to right field.
Johnson then notched the win with two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.
