WINSTED — Town officials are warning residents of a phone scam where the Caller ID reads, “TOWN OF WINCHESTER” and includes a local municipal number.

Scammers are spoofing the town’s name and phone number and, in some instances, while informing the resident of unpaid taxes, may be requesting credit card information or bank account information, according to a statement.

Taxpayers are advised that the town of Winchester will never call anyone to seek any type of personal details or payment information.

“While scammers can get very aggressive and be very convincing in their demands and may be using what appears to be legitimate Town of Winchester phone calls to call from, residents are encouraged to simply hang up on the scammer and to never give out any personal information,” officials said in a statement.
