The West Haven 12U girls basketball team had a rough week, losing to just one team. The problem was that they faced Durham twice during the past week.

Last Tuesday, the Westies lost to Durham, 46-39, in the quarterfinals of the Ulbrich Christmas Tournament.

Kial Watts scored eight of her game-high 15 points, including two 3-pointers, in the first half. After the Westies went down by 12 points in the second half, they went on a run to bring it to within two behind Chaniah Pantry, who scored six of her eight points in the half while pulling down 10 rebounds.

Lexi Malangone had a steal, five rebounds and went 4-for-6 from the line during the second half but the Westies could not overcome Durham.

On Sunday, in a league-scheduled game the Westies went on the road to face Durham again on their home court in what became a defensive battle.

Durham held on for a 39-33 victory.

The Westies had trouble getting the offense on track in the first quarter and trailed 8-4 and trailed 16-12 at halftime.

Amanda Martino got it going in the second half with two rebounds and six of her eight points. Ashley Rivera had seven points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot for the game and Alexis Severino had four points, seven steals, two assists and a rebound.
