CT Rises is sponsoring a volunteer team from World Renew to conduct a disaster-related needs assessment in Connecticut. Volunteers will be canvasing the Milford shoreline today and tomorrow.
World Renew volunteers are commonly referred to as the ‘Green Shirts,” a reference to the uniform the teams wear as a means of being easily identifiable within communities. The Green Shirts are experts in assessing and quantifying disaster-related property damage. Their objective is to provide Sandy survivors with unresolved storm damage to their homes access to a needs assessment team who can quantify necessary repair costs which can then be used to apply for assistance from newly available funding resources.
The World Renew visit is the culmination of many months of coordination between the many volunteer organizations involved in CT Rises. CT Rises Chair, Dale Martin, said, “Over the past year the CT Rises team has been working toward this goal. We are pleased to welcome World Renew to Connecticut. The Green Shirts are experts in disaster-related needs assessment. They are known for their compassion in working with disaster survivors in helping them identify and quantify disaster damage which is the first step in getting people back on track toward recovery.’
On Friday and Saturday, March 14-15, World Renew team members will be canvassing Connecticut neighborhoods hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. World Renew teams will focus on the Milford neighborhoods of Gulf Beach, Broadway and East Broadway and the Bridgeport areas of lower Seaview Avenue, Main and Broad Streets.
Additionally, walk-in centers will be available for storm-impacted individuals and families. The walk-in centers are easily accessible from I-95 and will be staffed by a World Renew needs assessment team as well as a CT Rises volunteer from the Red Cross or other affiliated organization. All those impacted by Hurricane Sandy may visit a walk-in center to meet with team members and gather valuable information that can help them gain access to disaster-recovery resources.
