Two Platt students win state auto skills championship

Technical ability and teamwork helped two students from Platt Technical High School clinch the Connecticut State Auto Skills Championship in a recent statewide competition, sponsored by AAA and the Ford Motor Company.

Michael Tracz of Derby and Giorgio Favia of West Haven matched their auto repair skills against the state’s best young auto technicians at a hands-on competition at The Holiday Inn, North Haven. Now the two advance to the June 9-11 National Finals in Dearborn, Michigan where they’ll compete against other two-person teams from other states for millions in scholarships and prizes.

Their instructor, Kirk Stankiewicz, will accompany them to the national finals.

The state championships were determined by an on-line, qualifying exam and the team’s performance in a hands-on competition to quickly and accurately repair a deliberately disabled 2013 Ford Focus SE. In the national finals, student teams also will diagnose and repair a deliberately disabled vehicle.
