Two Foran students share role of Sugar Plum Fairy in this year's Nutcracker

Milford residents Shaina Arsenault and Katie Kurata will dance the lead role of Sugar Plum Fairy in New England Ballet Company’s Nutcracker at Parsons Auditorium this holiday season.

Sophomores at Foran High School, Shaina and Katie have danced together for 12 years. They debuted as little mice in the battle scene at the age of four and over the years have often shared the spotlight in major roles such as Clara in 2010.
The girls share a love of dance, a friendship dating to pre-school at St. Mary’s School, and a commitment to giving back to the community. Shaina is a Natural Helper and secretary of the Foran chapter of DECA, an organization that prepares students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
Katie participates in student government as secretary of the Sophomore Class. Both girls assist as mentors in the Milford Recreation Department adaptive dance and theatre programs. They dance in the weekly classes and will perform with class participants in the annual Adaptive Nutcracker Suite, choreographed and created in partnership with New England Ballet for children and young adults with autism and other special needs.
The Adaptive Nutcracker Suite will be performed at Parsons Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m.
The 21st Annual Nutcracker will be performed at Parson’s Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m., with Shaina dancing as Sugar Plum Fairy, and Dec. 9 at 1 p.m., with Katie dancing as Sugar Plum Fairy.
In addition to these shows, the two will also perform in the annual show, now in its 21st year, for Milford fourth graders on Dec. 6 and in Sugar Plum Party Nutcracker Suite, a shortened version of Nutcracker choreographed for young children, at the Stratford Theatre on Nov. 25.
Tickets for the Sugar Plum Party at the Stratford Theatre and for Nutcracker at Parsons are available through New England Ballet Box Office. Call 203-799-7950 or visit
