The arrival of Tropical Storm Hermine has caused a hazardous weather outlook for the area beginning late Saturday.

While Friday and Saturday’s daytime weather appears pleasant and mostly sunny, Saturday night’s forecast is for the start of rain brought in by the storm. Hermine was initially classified as a hurricane when it made landfall in Florida Friday but weakened into a tropical storm before heading to Georgia and the Carolinas.

The hazardous weather outlook means Hermine could cause moderate to major coastal flooding impacts through the holiday weekend as well as possible heavy rain and strong winds. There could also be a high risk of rip currents as well as beach erosion through the weekend and early next week.

According to the state emergency center,  Hermine is expected to move back out over open water near Cape Hatteras by Saturday evening. Hermine is then expected to slow down and nearly stall south of Long Island on Sunday. The storm is forecast to intensify somewhat as it transitions to a post-tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.  Hermine is forecast to drift very slowly to the north on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to a position approximately 150 miles south of Long Island by Wednesday morning.

Based on the official NHC forecast, Connecticut can expect some minor flooding at first on Sunday and the potential for minor to moderate flooding as the storm continues to impact the area on Monday and Tuesday.
