Thousands of rubber ducks will race down river Sunday in Milford
This weekend marks the date for one of Milford’s big downtown events, the annual Milford Harbor Duck Race.
On Sunday, May 5, thousands of little yellow rubber ducks will float down the Wepawaug River from behind Stonebridge Restaurant and over the falls near Fowler Field. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fowler Pavilion, located behind the Milford Public Library and next to the Wepawaug River.
The event will start at 11 with a craft fair, food, entertainment, giveaways, and rubber ducks. The day includes a corporate duck race for businesses at noon with top prizes from Stonebridge Restaurant, Bin 100, SBC Restaurant, Sloppy Jose’s, Bridge House, and Barcelona. The signature Milford Harbor Duck Race takes place at 2 p.m.
“People of all ages will flock to the river’s edge and watch a sea of yellow rubber ducks race down the falls, giving ‘duck winners’ a chance to win one of 95 fabulous prizes,” organizers said. “The race will be kicked off by a welcome from Milford Mayor Ben Blake. At 2 p.m. thousands of ducks will begin their journey and race to the finish line.”
Anyone can become a duck owner by purchasing duck raffle certificates at $5 each at one of many store locations, including Bella Napoli, Café Atlantique, Canvas Patch, Cloud 9 Day Spa, Ocean’s Spray, Milford Green Pizza, Villa Gourmet, Suzie Cakes, Liquid Lunch, Stacey Blake Realty, Antelope Web, Teri Anna’s Ceramic Studio, P.C. Richard, Rita’s Ice of Milford, The Edge in Milford, Valentine’s, Whole Foods, and at the event itself.
The duck raffle certificates are numbered and will correspond with a number located on the bottom of each rubber race duck. As the ducks finish their race, they will soar through a funnel one by one. The first 95 ducks to finish the race will win their owners one of 95 raffle prizes, which include a Kissimee, Fla., resort vacation, a week at Cape Winds Resort, a 40-inch Samsung LCD HDTV and Yamaha RXV573, 7.1 Surround Sound System, an Apple iPad mini, and many more.
Race winners do not need to be present to win. Radio personality Brian Smith will be the emcee for the day. Crossfit Milford will offer Crossfit kids demonstrations. There also will be face painting, henna tattoos, Touch a Fire Truck, and more. Food will be available throughout the day at the food court. Joey C’s Roadhouse BBQ, Bella Napoli, Rita’s of Milford, Old Fashioned Kettle Corn, and the Milford Elks will be serving food.
The Milford Harbor Duck Race is held annually, rain or shine, on the first Sunday in May. The race is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
