Take some time to remember

War is incomprehensible and inconceivable, horrific and haphazard, necessary and real.

Marines, airmen, soldiers and seamen the world over have long been respected for their collective role as patriotic performers on history's most perilous stage.

But without having served, to truly grasp the tangible and immaterial havoc wrought by armed conflict is a virtual impossibility. How can one purport to see through the eyes of another when those eyes have witnessed horrors beyond comprehension?

Memorial Day is an occasion to honor our country's veterans and war dead with due respect and the utmost solemnity, not a time to uncover the true nature of global conflict or profess to argue the merits of combat.

Orange will sponsor its annual Memorial Day Parade on Sunday, May 28, at 11:00 a.m.. The parade will go down Orange Center Road.

Bethany's Memorial Day Parade is being held on Monday, May 29 at 10:00 a.m.. Participants are gathering at the old Bethany Airport.

Holidays tend to lose their meaning amidst parties, travel and other assorted hoopla. If nothing else, take a moment on May 29 to remember why is has been designated Memorial day.
