Stratford man dies in three-car wreck on Route 8 on Saturday
A Stratford man died on Saturday morning after his car was involved in a crash on Route 8 near Exit 7 in Trumbull.
According a State Police report, Clifford Voight, 61, of 480 James Farm Road, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent’s Medical Center on Saturday morning following the three-car wreck. Police said Voight was traveling south on Route 8 at about 9:30 a.m. between exits 8 and 7 when the accident occurred. State Police said a Suzuki sport-utility vehicle driven by Jonathan Hernandez, 29, of Wallingford, dramatically reduced speed in the left lane, causing Derek Michaels, 32, of Vernon, to slow down his Jeep Grand Cherokee. As both of those vehicles slowed or stopped, Voight’s Nissan Maxima forcibly struck Vernon’s vehicle, which caused Vernon’s vehicle to hit Hernandez’s vehicle.
Voight was transported by Trumbull EMS to St. Vincent’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead from the injuries he suffered, according to the State Police report. Hernandez was also taken to St. Vincent’s for treatment of minor injuries and later released. Michaels reported no injuries, police said.
State Police said the wreck remains under investigation.
Trumbull firefighters were on scene to protect the scene from traffic and clean spilled fluids. A witness on Route 8 shortly after 10 a.m. reported traffic at a complete stop, and Trumbull police and fire units at the scene with two cars off the road in the grass.
Traffic remained backed up on Route 8 and the Merritt Parkway more than 90 minutes after the crash.
